Time to ponder another great game that got screwed by "better" releases:
Unreal 2: The Awakening by Legend Entertainment
Platforms: PC and Xbox
Instead of this you were probably playing: Unreal Tournament Whatever
This
game was doomed to failure almost three years prior to its release,
thanks to the expectations of fans set by Epic's own Unreal Tournament
games. Determined to reign in the series' notoriety for being a
shallow multiplayer-only experience, they allowed Legend Entertainment
to take another stab at fleshing out the canon with a strictly
single-player sequel to the original. After its release, they learned
that Unreal fans don't give a shit about single player.
Epic had committed the cardinal sin of failing to know its audience. Where Unreal II excelled was not where UT fans cared for excellence. Its involving story line, intriguing cinematography, interesting characters, and unique weaponry fell to the wayside in light of gameplay that was derivative of the 1998 original.
These days, Epic makes its lame attempts at possessing depth with the Gears of War series, which excel in all the places the UT fans care about; action, multiplayer, gore, and little else. They are fun and I can not complain as they offer exactly what is promised, but I do miss the days when companies had the balls to take the long road.
You can see what you missed by downloading the demo here. Then you can go back to playing Unreal 2000-Who-Gives-A-Shit instead.
